Sermon For The Tenth Sunday After Pentecost

It’s Still Burning

Luke 12:49-53 I Came To Cast Fire On The Earth

Jesus said He came to cast fire on the earth, not to bring peace, but rather to cause division. But this passage doesn't mean what it first sounds like. These are words of encouragement to remain steadfast in the faith because of what Jesus has done for you. But since we are all sinners, and some do not want to hear the Gospel message, there are unintended consequences. It creates division between believers and non-believers, even in the same family.

HIGH ANXIETY, OR HIGH HOPES?

LUKE 12:22-34 FEAR NOT LITTLE FLOCK

Life is stressful. Whether we're from the first century or the twenty-first, there is much that makes us anxious. Jesus tells us not to fear, not to be anxious. That's easy for Him to say! We remain sinners, so we remain stressed out. Jesus teaches us why we need to trust in Him. He teaches us not to worry, and what to do when we do worry.

Do We Need A Bigger Barn?

Luke 12:13-21 The Parable of the Rich Fool

Jesus told the parable of the rich fool to caution us against the sin of avarice, the greed, and covetousness of wanting what we don't have. It's not just about your stuff. We can covet other's well-being. We can lust after another’s faith. We think if only we had their lives, we'd be happy, too. And we can hate them for it…

Pray Boldly Like Abraham

Sometimes we take prayer for granted. Sometimes we stand as God's accuser when we think He's not doing His job. Abraham teaches us that praying boldly does not mean praying timidly, and the answers we receive are the answers we need, not the answer we want. Text: Genesis 18:22-33 Abraham Intercedes for Sodom.
